Bedding Care 101: Washing, Protecting and Making Beds Feel Hotel-Fresh
Hotel beds feel the way they do because of routine, not luxury. The same three habits — wash right, protect everything, layer in order — work in any home. Here is the honest version of each.
Wash temperatures, minus the myths
- Sheets and pillowcases: weekly at 40°C is the sweet spot — hot enough for skin oils, gentle enough for fibres. A monthly 60°C cycle deals with dust mites if allergies are an issue.
- Bamboo-cover toppers and delicate weaves: 30°C, gentle spin, no fabric softener — softener coats the fibres and kills the moisture-wicking that makes bamboo worth buying.
- Duvets and pillows: two or three times a year is plenty if they are protected (next point). Dry them completely — a half-dry duvet is how musty smells start.
Protectors and encasements: the unglamorous heroes
A mattress protector is a washable barrier that takes the sweat, spills and accidents your mattress otherwise absorbs forever. A full encasement zips around the whole mattress — the choice for allergy households, as it seals dust mites out of the sleeping surface entirely. Fit one under the topper and your comfort layers stay fresh years longer. You will find both in our bedding collection.
The hotel layering order
- Encasement or protector (the barrier)
- Topper (the comfort)
- Fitted sheet, pulled drum-tight
- Duvet folded back in thirds, pillows karate-chopped — the two tricks that make any bed photograph like a hotel's
The refresh rhythm
Weekly: sheets. Monthly: protector wash + topper airing. Seasonally: duvet wash, mattress rotate, pillow check (fold a pillow in half — if it stays folded, it is done). Twenty minutes a month, and every night feels like check-in.
