Christmas decorations: the tree, the lights and the bits that last
Planning decorations early gives you time to measure the room and compare storage needs. Price and availability still vary; buying in autumn is not a guaranteed saving.
The tree: height first, then tip count
Measure the ceiling, floor space, stand and topper together. Leave the clearance required by the tree and any lighting instructions. Tip count is only one feature: branch shape, material and arrangement also affect fullness.
- PVC tips — flat cut plastic, cheapest, fine at a distance.
- PE / moulded tips — moulded from a real branch, much more realistic close up, more expensive.
- Mixed — PE on the outer branches where you see them, PVC inside. Usually the sensible buy.

Lights: the number people always get wrong
Choose light-string length and spacing to suit the tree and the effect you want. A lights-per-metre formula is a styling suggestion, not an electrical specification.
- Warm white reads as candlelight and flatters everything. Cool white reads clinical indoors.
- Wrap the branch, not the outline. Run the string in and out from trunk to tip; depth is what makes a tree glow rather than glare.
- Connect light sets only when the manufacturer explicitly allows that combination and number of sets. Never improvise connectors.
- Check UK voltage and plug compatibility before buying mains-powered lights: UK mains supply is 230 V and the equipment must be suitable for it. An outdoor label on the string does not make every transformer or connection weatherproof; follow the installation instructions and outdoor protection requirements.

The bits that finish it
- A tree skirt or collar can cover the stand while leaving electrical equipment accessible and correctly ventilated. Browse: tree skirts
- Topper — size it to the tree: a topper more than about a fifth of the tree height looks top-heavy. See tree toppers.

Ornaments: shatterproof where it matters
Keep fragile ornaments and small parts out of reach of children and pets. Shatter-resistant wording does not make an ornament a toy; choose age-appropriate decorations and secure them properly.
Storage is what decides whether you buy again next year
Store dry decorations with protection against crushing. Follow the light maker’s storage advice and inspect wires, plugs and lamps before reuse; do not use damaged lighting. Browse: baskets, bins and containers · storage and organisation
