How to measure an under-sink cupboard for an organiser

Measure the clear cupboard opening, the usable space around the pipes and the room needed to pull the organiser out. A cupboard's advertised width does not describe all three. Compare your notes with the organiser's complete assembled dimensions and its installation instructions before choosing.

1. Sketch the cupboard before measuring

Empty the area you want to use and make a simple top-view sketch. Mark the sink bowl above, waste pipes, hoses, valves, hinges and any shelf or central upright. Photograph the space as a reminder, but use measurements rather than perspective in the photograph to decide what fits.

Keep everything in one unit, such as centimetres. Record left and right spaces separately if pipework divides the cupboard. Do not count a gap behind a pipe as usable just because the cupboard floor continues behind it.

2. Measure the entrance and the usable space

With the door in its normal fully open position, measure the narrowest clear opening. Check for hinges or a frame that intrude into the route. Then measure the usable width and depth where the organiser will stand. Allow for the closed door and anything fixed to its inside.

Measure height at the front, middle and back of the intended footprint. A deep sink bowl or bend in a waste pipe can make one section much lower than another. For a two-tier organiser, check the space occupied by each tier; an unobstructed base does not prove the upper basket fits.

Under-sink fit worksheet
Check What to record Compare with
Entrance Narrowest opening with the door open The complete unit and the route needed to insert it
Stored footprint Clear width and depth at the intended position Overall assembled size, including rails, feet and attachments
Loaded height Height beneath the lowest obstruction Basket or shelf position plus the items you intend to store
Movement Space in front and beside the cupboard The full extension or removal path
Access Positions of valves, joints and service points Whether the unit can be moved to retain access

3. Check the loaded organiser and its movement

Use the tallest item you intend to store to check vertical space above its proposed shelf. Leave room to pick it up without forcing it against the sink or pipes. A bottle fitting inside a basket is a separate question from being able to lift it out.

A slide-out frame, a loose basket and a wheeled caddy move differently. Read the exact model's instructions, including any mounting requirements. Check the route past the hinge and open door, plus room for your hand at the handle. Do not move pipework or choose drilling positions from a storage guide.

Include optional parts in your comparison. For example, YouCopia's RollOut caddy specification gives a different depth when its hanging basket is fitted. That is a reason to check the configuration you will use, rather than relying on a product name or the bare basket size.

Worked example: a wide opening with a narrower space behind it

Illustrative measurements only: suppose the opening is 42 cm wide, but a pipe leaves a clear strip only 25 cm wide where a unit would stand. An organiser measuring 28 cm across could pass through the door yet would not fit that strip. A 23 cm-wide option would pass this width check, but its depth, loaded height, installation needs and movement still need checking. The remaining 2 cm is not a universal clearance recommendation.

Questions before choosing

Will an organiser for a 600 mm cupboard fit?

The cabinet label alone is not enough. Compare the actual opening and clear internal space with the manufacturer's minimum cabinet requirements and assembled dimensions.

Does a pull-out organiser need fixing in place?

Some designs do and some do not. Check the exact installation method, fixing surface and instructions; the phrase “pull-out” does not establish how the unit is secured.

What if the measurements are too close to call?

Ask for any missing overall or installed dimensions before ordering. A measurement that ignores a handle, hinge or loaded shelf cannot settle the fit.
